T/GEL Tuesday, Dont you just love the smell of tar in the morning?

Yes I realize its Thursday but it didn't sound as fun! And no they are not paving the road, this smell is coming from my morning shower. And while I really want to overhaul the bathroom, I wont be using tar. So what the heck am I talking about?

I normally don't chat about very private things but I think this one is important as there are 2 very important life lessons I have learned. Be aware of yourself and go to a professional. About 6 weeks ago I noticed a single hair that came off my head looked a little odd. Now all of you with long hair out there know that you shed hair everyday but typically its breakage. The average person looses about 100 hairs a day, but with 100,000 this is barely noticeable.  This time was different. It was a full strand of healthy hair but with a grayish color on the last centimeter or so. It was apparent that this was different, but I went about my day.

The next morning while brushing my hair I noticed the brush was full, and I mean really full, like the kind you see on Tabitha Takeover Salon Makeover and they haven't cleaned the brushes in a year. And there seemed to be more of these grayish full strands. I pointed it out to Todd and just kind of brushed it off but that's how it started and the shed fest never seemed to stop! We flew out to Hawaii and a few hairs showed themselves on the way, and out of embarrassment I would collect them in my pocket until I found garbage cans. On the way back from our trip while in California it became much more noticeable and irritating. I vowed when we came home I would go to the doctor but in my normal fashion I went back to work Monday at 6 am and was back in full swing.

Notice my part line. Its not wet its thinning!!!
Finally after another 2 weeks it was obvious that it was getting worse and no sign of stopping so what did I do? Oh yes, of course, self diagnose using the Internet. REALLY BAD IDEA! I had everything from Lupus to Cancer to Thyroid Problems.

After the ACRR Running camp was over, and once I realized I was pinning my hair back everyday(and not because of the extreme heat but rather to pin up the fall out until I was home where I could shed in private) I called the doctor.

Really nervous about all of this I brought my hairbrush which I clean every morning to assess what is going on. The doctor was very nice but very socratic:
Dr. "Are you growing hair in any other places?"
Me "No, well now that you mention it my leg hair is growing fast but I think thats my vitamins"
Dr. " I mean in weird places, like a man."
Me. "No"
Dr. "Let me look at your eyes are you cold a lot?"
Me "No more than any other female I know."
He looks at me through his weird spectacles, no emotion on his face, I guess he didn't think I was funny.
Dr." Have you had a really high fever or a car wreck in the past 60 days?"
Me. "No"
Dr." OK well do you have any other questions for me?"
Me"When can I color my roots?"
Again he doesn't get the serious tone of my humor. Those of you who know me well know I wasn't joking. Vanity is such a time consuming hobby.

He didn't really have anything else to say after that. It was pretty funny. His nurse waited until he left the room and explained that I may not want to color my hair for a little while. Lucky for me the T/GEL(The "T" actually stands for tar!) darkens the hair so I should be good to go for a bit, but if you see me sporting some funky roots please know that it is against my will!

Luckily, and with a huge sigh of relief I have a diagnosis!! Or at least one of those, "here is what we are going to do, and if in 4 weeks you aren't better, we will run the $1000 in tests" diagnosis. Seborrhoeic dermatitis. Basically a weird form of  eczema. It actually explains a lot as my mother thinks that i have had a nervous tick of scratching my head for about 2 years which was actually me scratching at my condition. I guess somewhere between the stress of changing jobs, a lot of training and the very hot and humid summer it irritated the condition to the point that  it became toxic and caused my hair to fall out.

It always amazes me that I resort to self diagnosing to save a little time. Hind sight being crystal clear I could have saved about 30,000 hairs!!!!  I should have paid a little more attention and could have been diagnosed with the dermatitis years ago but really just pushed it off as nothing.

So now I'm armed with a lot of shampoos, Head and Shoulder, T Gel and some Ketokonazole stuff, then a oily steroid treatment every night. I look all granny fabulous with my shower cap to sleep in.
But whats amazing is that whether the hair falling out is cured or not, within about 5 minutes of putting the oil on my head I was completely unaware of my scalp! AHHH relief. So yes if it smells like someone is paving when I'm around on Tuesday or Thursday, it's me, but know that I'm T/Gelling.

"No. 12 A FEW THINGS TO AVOID WHEN ENTERTAINING IN THE SUMMER: FORMAL CENTERPIECES, HOT OVENS, SHIRTS." BA, JUNE11

It has been some time since my last post. Many many excuses for this, no good reasons, but I want to be sure to update those who do follow.

Some of you have heard that I am no longer with the Chamber and this is not a rumor. Rumors are the following:
I'm pregnant-NO, and I proved this yesterday with the 2.5 Shock Tops watching The Red River Band
I'm ill-NO, although some may argue this
ADP called and offered me my job-NO

What is true:
I'm currently not working for a paycheck
I'm still pursuing my passion of community service
The Chamber was not a fit for me

The story goes a little like this. I wont bore you to death with details, as its nauseating, but there were the expectations given to me, there were the expectations of the group at large of me, then there was what the job(refuse to call it career or any other word) that I was doing 60 hours a week. I had some fun, and saw some opportunities that I am sad I could not pursue but had to move on.

So here I am, sitting in a bread shop in Titusville, and after having read cover to cover BA and finding some excellent summer dishes, I'm always moving forward.

So what now? You may recall the May post regarding the Bike Awareness Weekend. I'm diligently working on this for an October/November time frame. This has become much larger than originally conceived, not because I'm over reaching, but there seems to be a resounding cheer of excitement when i tell folks in town about it. So look for more to come on this. The Business Plan is made, but need permits and approval locally before I start dealing out details.

As for my blog, i have about 20 posts written, non edited and ready to be published. Mostly due to 60+ hour weeks for the past 2 months spinning on the gerbil mill. My good friend Alicia has promised to lend me some of her blog expertise and help design this hideous thing and I cant wait for some of you to read about our trip to Hawaii and summer food menus.

So that's the quick and dirty. I know its not pretty, or glamorous, or fun, funny, or any real revelations. But I did come across a rule to live by for the summer today, which happens to be "Rule 2: it's important to embrace laziness." Rule number 1 is to eat outside, with your hands preferably.

With that said, looking forward to spending some time with Sophia and Kori today, Sara, Andrew and Becky tomorrow, taking in as much Tour de France as humanly possible and working on my fitness!!!
